PULaski to host silent victim display

RADFORD, Va, October 15, 2010 –In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Pulaski will be hosting the Silent Witness display on October 25th and 26th from 9 – 4 in front of the Safe Haven Visitation Center (44 3rd St. N.W., Pulaski – across from the courthouse).  Silent Witness Virginia is a statewide public awareness campaign and a visual memorial to victims of domestic violence homicide.  The display is sponsored by the Pulaski Domestic Violence Committee, a group of criminal justice and advocacy professionals committed to improving our community’s response to domestic violence.  In case of rain, the display will be rescheduled for a later date.

The Silent Witnesses are life-sized plywood silhouettes, bearing a shield on which is written the story of a Virginia woman, child, or man who was killed in a domestic violence homicide.  The victims memorialized include individuals killed by their abusive partner, as well as bystanders killed as a result of these attacks.  According to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, 99 people lost their lives due to domestic violence homicide in 2008.  In addition 22 children witnessed these events, and countless friends and family members are impacted by the loss.

If you are interested in honoring a loved one with a Silent Witness silhouette, information will be available at the display or by contacting Mary Beth Pulsifer at the Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley 639-9592.
